A New Chapter: Our First Table Potato Harvest

ForestFoods

This weekend brings a significant change at ForestFoods; we have harvested our very first table potatoes and sold them in the online shop. This marks the beginning of the availability of table potatoes, with the next batch of potatoes set to be available next weekend.

Progress in the Field

Our table potatoes were planted about three-and-a-half months ago. With enough spacing between the plants, each plant had ample room to develop. During week 3, a heaping process was used to increase the soil’s surface area, prevent scorching, loosen the soil, and encourage proper tuber formation.

As the plants began drying out, which signals the end of their growth cycle, we carefully cut them from the bottom and left the tubers in the soil for two additional weeks. This practice toughens the skin, increases shelf life, and improves ease of handling. Once ready, the produce is sent to the pack house to be sorted by size; the smaller potatoes are retained for seed use on the farm, while the larger ones are selected for sale.

Our current harvest comes from the Tatu City farm, with another batch planted at the same time in Limuru moving to the harvest on Friday. These potatoes, available last week and now included in this week’s veg box, are 100% chemical-free, staying true to our signature Regenerative Agriculture approach to farming.

What This Means for Your Veg Box

More Choices, Better Produce

The addition of table potatoes means that your veg box now includes an expanded range of fresh produce. This new option complements the vegetables you already know and love, providing an extra dimension of versatility for your kitchen. Whether you prefer hearty roasts, rustic mashes, or creative seasonal dishes, these potatoes offer practical benefits and flexibility.

The Health Benefits of ForestFoods Table Potatoes

Beyond their culinary versatility, our table potatoes offer an impressive range of health benefits. They are an excellent source of complex carbohydrates, providing long-lasting energy without spiking blood sugar levels. Rich in dietary fiber, they promote healthy digestion and support gut health.

ForestFoods Table Potatoes are also packed with essential vitamins and minerals. A single serving provides a significant amount of vitamin C, which boosts the immune system and supports skin health. They are also high in potassium, a mineral that helps regulate blood pressure and maintain proper muscle function.

Moreover, the antioxidants found in potatoes, such as flavonoids, carotenoids, and phenolic acids, contribute to overall health by protecting cells from oxidative damage.

Since our potatoes are grown without chemicals, you can enjoy these benefits without concern for pesticide residues.

Enhanced Quality Through Innovation

This harvest demonstrates that our push to change the face of agriculture in Africa is taking root. By introducing new crops according to our proven Syntropic Agroforestry schedule, we continue to deliver ingredients that meet high standards and provide nutritious variety to our clients. The process used for these table potatoes ensures better shelf life and easier handling, reflecting our commitment to quality at every stage.

In other news, a welcome update from the field –  our Limuru farm is now seeing the first signs of sprouting plums and avocados. More news on this will be shared in the next few weeks!

Thank you for being part of our journey. We look forward to sharing more updates from the farm, and we hope you enjoy the new table potatoes in your next veg box.
